A stevedore is a person or company that is responsible for loading and unloading cargo from ships in a port. The term “stevedore” comes from the Portuguese word “estivador,” which means “one who stuffs.”Stevedores are involved in various tasks related to the handling of cargo, such as securing loads, operating cranes and forklifts, and ensuring that cargo is properly stowed in the ship’s hold or on the dock. They may also be responsible for supervising the work of longshoremen, who are the workers who physically move the cargo.
